Growing Up with Anime Girls Who Weren’t Always “Strong”
Back when I first started watching anime, I used to admire the male protagonists a lot — you know, Goku, Naruto, Ichigo… all these boys had big dreams, power-ups, and intense battles to fight.
But when it came to female characters, many of them were… well, just there. Either they were love interests, background supporters, or sometimes the overly emotional types who needed saving.
And it bugged me. A lot.
Because I wasn’t that girl. And I know many of you aren’t either. We don’t want to just cheer from the sidelines — we want to fight our own battles, become our own heroes, and protect others too.
But over the years, anime changed.
And so did its portrayal of women.
And let me tell you, it’s been so satisfying to see strong, layered, complex female characters rise and shine.
Let’s talk about how that evolution happened, and celebrate some of the best female anime characters that continue to inspire us today.
The Evolution of Female Protagonists in Anime
Earlier anime (like in the 80s or 90s) often featured women in secondary roles. Sure, there were a few exceptions (like Sailor Moon or Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion), but most female characters lacked depth. They were often portrayed as emotional, dependent, or simply existing to motivate the male lead.
But then came the shift……writers, studios, and audiences started craving more. And guess what? We got it.
Now, we see female protagonists in anime who are bold, fierce, emotionally intelligent, flawed, funny, and sometimes even scary powerful. From sword-wielding warriors to sharp-minded strategists — we’ve got it all. And personally, it’s one of the biggest reasons I fell deeper in love with anime.
I remember watching Attack on Titan and literally sitting up straight when Mikasa Ackerman stepped in. There was something so quietly powerful about her — she wasn’t loud or dramatic, but when she fought, it gave me chills. It was the first time I saw a woman in anime not as someone’s “crush” but as a force to be reckoned with.
My Top 7 Strong Female Characters in Anime
Okay, narrowing this down was so hard. There are so many incredible women in anime now — each with their own type of strength. Here’s my personal list of favorite strong anime girls, and why they mean so much to me:
1. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Let’s start with the queen. Mikasa is calm, collected, and probably one of the strongest physically on this list. But what makes her stand out is her loyalty and quiet determination. She doesn’t fight for glory; she fights to protect. Her trauma hasn’t broken her — it shaped her. And honestly? That hit home for me.
“The world is cruel. But also very beautiful.” – Mikasa
2. Nobara Kugisaki (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Okay, can we talk about how refreshing Nobara is? She’s powerful, fashionable, sarcastic, and doesn’t care about being “ladylike.” One of my favorite lines of hers — and maybe one of the best quotes in anime — is:
“I don’t give a damn about ‘men’ or ‘women.’ I’m going to be me and do what I want. Because I’m Nobara Kugisaki!”
This line gave me goosebumps. It made me feel seen. Girls don’t need to pick between strength and femininity. We can be both. Nobara shows that you can rock a cute outfit and still be the most dangerous person in the room. Her energy is everything I aspire to be — confident, fearless, and totally herself.
3. Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail)
Erza is that character who made me believe in discipline and inner strength. She’s scary strong, and not just in battle, her emotional resilience is unmatched. Watching her stand up after being broken again and again taught me a lot about rising even when everything feels like it’s falling apart.
Violet Evergarden (Violet Evergarden)
Violet is… breathtaking. Her journey from a human weapon to someone learning to understand emotions is one of the most beautiful arcs I’ve ever seen.
She made me cry. A lot.
Violet’s strength lies in her vulnerability. Watching her write letters for people, help them reconnect with loved ones, and learn what love truly means — it’s the kind of character growth that stays with you.
I related to her deeply. Especially during moments when I felt numb, lost, or robotic. Violet reminded me that healing is possible. That even the most broken parts of us can learn to feel again.
Nana Osaki (NANA)
Oh, Nana.
She’s not your typical “strong female character,” but she’s real. She smokes, sings in a punk band, falls in love hard, and battles with her own demons.
She reminds me of the kind of friend who looks tough on the outside but is soft inside — the kind of person I sometimes become. Watching Nana be her chaotic, passionate self while dealing with heartbreak and friendship made me realize that being messy doesn’t mean you’re weak.
6. Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)
Now you might be wondering — Tohru? Strong? YES. Not all strength is physical. Tohru’s emotional intelligence, kindness, and ability to love unconditionally, even when she’s hurting, is rare. She taught me that being soft doesn’t make you weak. In fact, it takes immense strength to stay kind in a cruel world.
7. Sakura Haruno (Naruto Shippuden)
Controversial pick, I know. But hear me out, Sakura’s growth is real. From a whiny, insecure girl to a medical ninja who can literally crack the earth with her punch — her journey matters. I used to hate her (I admit it), but the older I got, the more I realized her struggle was so human. Her growth is for all of us late bloomers.
Why Strong Anime Girls Matter
There’s something magical about seeing yourself reflected in the characters you watch. When we see female protagonists in anime who are independent, brave, complicated, and unapologetically themselves — it validates us.
For me, anime has helped me heal. During lonely phases, anxiety-filled nights, or when life just felt meh, watching girls like Nobara or Tohru reminded me I wasn’t alone. That it’s okay to be messy, to cry, to fight back, and to keep growing.
These characters don’t just exist in their stories, they become part of ours.
And for young girls watching anime today? They get to grow up seeing women who lead the charge, save the day, make hard choices, and don’t wait to be rescued. That’s powerful.
Let’s Talk — Who’s Your Favorite?
I could go on forever, honestly. There are SO many more strong anime girls I didn’t even mention — like Hinata from Haikyuu!!, Usagi from Sailor Moon, Kallen from Code Geass, and of course, Nezuko from Demon Slayer.
But I want to hear from you.
